  • Tis the Season of Giving

With the season of giving upon us, and the end of the semester quickly approaching, I would like to take this time to reflect on just what your giving has meant to the more than 23,000 students that we serve each day in Birmingham City Schools.

With teaching and learning as our primary focus, our Principals, faculty and staff are on the frontline of educating our children.  From assessing and interpreting data for improved student achievement to providing classroom instruction, your tireless efforts are key to ensuring that students are learning and achieving at high levels. For giving our students the best possible chance of success in college, career and life, I thank you.

Our central office administrators and employees are committed to providing support to schools and students.  Whether working to improve instruction, providing responsible, financial stewardship, or recruiting a viable and highly-qualified workforce, you play a pivotal role in helping to promote student success.  For giving your support and assistance to our schools and students, I thank you.

Many of our classified employees operate behind-the-scenes; nevertheless, they play key roles in facilitating the smooth, day-to-day operation of our system.  With bus drivers safely transporting students to schools, our service center maintaining our facilities, security providing protection and technology granting access to the internet, our classified employees are critical to the successful operation of our schools.  For giving your service and expertise to support operational and administrative efficiency, I thank you.

Education is an enormous challenge, and the schools can’t do it alone.  That is why we appreciate the support of our community partners.  Direct personal involvement, strong organizational commitment and enthusiasm have helped fill in gaps in human, material and financial resources in the wake of shrinking budgets and dwindling resources.  Whether corporate, non-profit, social service, faith-based or civic, our partners bring numerous resources to help meet the needs of our students.  For giving your time, talent and treasure, I thank you.

With the implementation of our K-12 International Baccalaureate programming, Career Academies and Advanced Placement classes, we recognize that is imperative to offer our families and students choices.  With more academic options, we have been able to stabilize our student population, and are working hard to attract even more students.   We thank our parents for making Birmingham City Schools their first academic choice.  For entrusting us with your children -- your most precious gift -- I thank you.

With each of our stakeholder groups working together, it is important for us to recognize the leadership under which these groups serve.  Our board of education members provide direction in pursuit of its mission to guide all students to achieve excellence in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.  Though we’ve endured some challenges, our board remains dedicated and strong.  For your steadfast commitment to the students we serve, I thank you.

Yes, ‘tis the season of giving, and in the spirit of service, your gifts make our community a better place!
