Engage. Empower. Excel. As your Superintendent, it is my commitment to these guiding principles that will help define our work, shape our plans, and drive our actions to ensure the highest level of achievement for our students, and yield the greatest success for our community.
As a lifelong educator, I have witnessed the power of partnerships. Educating our students to help them achieve their greatest potential is an incredible responsibility; and, we recognize that schools can’t do this alone. That is why community engagement is critical to student, school and community success. As your superintendent, it is my commitment to build relationships that generate trust and good will, build support for schools and students, and establish clear and effective communication to support teaching and learning. Collectively and cooperatively engaged, we can create a network of support that encourages our students to learn, grow, achieve and thrive.
As your superintendent, it is my vision to make Birmingham City Schools the premier education choice and first academic option for our families and our community. It’s been said that “vision without action is merely a dream.” That’s where empowerment comes in. Empowerment creates an environment that inspires the will and the confidence to do something. That something, for our system, is creating a culture and climate where the community feels welcomed, valued, and appreciated. That something, for schools, is ensuring a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for college, career and life. That something, for students, is assuming personal responsibility to make the best of every academic opportunity, and to face rigor and challenge with curiosity and courage.
As a member of this community, I am keenly aware that our work in Birmingham City Schools has a far-reaching impact on our city, our state and our nation. The stakes are high, and it is imperative that we excel at what we do. Recognizing that education has the power to change lives, it is my duty to remain laser-focused on this important work, and to ensure its execution to fidelity, each and every day.
It is my honor to serve you as Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools. With a firm commitment from our board, strong leadership in our schools and broad community support, Birmingham City Schools will accomplish its mission of guiding all students to achieve excellence in a safe, secure and nurturing environment. Together, as we engage, empower and excel, Birmingham City Schools will realize its vision as a recognized leader in public education.
