• 1. How can I get timely and regular communication from my child's school and the school system? 

    Please make sure your contact information is accurate when you register your child and that it is updated should any e-mail addresses or phone numbers change throughout the year. We have a rapid communication system that is regularly used to keep parents updated and to alert parents of any urgent matter. 

    The official Birmingham City Schools app gives you a personalized window into what is happening at the district and schools. Get the news and information that you care about and get involved.

    Users can view district and school news, use the district tip line, receive notifications from the district and schools, access the district directory, and display information personalized to your interests.

    2. What do you offer for Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) students?

    Pre-K Registration is open to all students who will be 4 years of age on or before September 1.

    3. What do you offer for Kindergarten students?

    Kindergarten Registration is open to all students who will be 5 years of age on or before September 1. Please contact your child’s school for more information. 

    4. How important is it to attend Open House events?

    Education is a collaborative effort between schools, parents, and the community at large. Open House events provide an opportunity for your child's teachers to share with you information specific to their grade level or course. Your presence is extremely important; you will learn exactly what is expected of your child in each setting and be shown ways you can help them achieve success.

    5. Do you allow a student to attend a school out of zone?

    The Birmingham City Schools takes transfer applications to attend a school out of zone.  Students must meet attendance and discipline requirements to be considered for a transfer.  Transfers requests are allowed based upon space availability at a school. Parents/Guardians must reapply for transfers each school year.

    6. How can I find out what school supplies are necessary?

    Required materials vary from school to school and from grade level to grade level. Please check the school’s website or contact your child’s teacher for a specific list.

    7. How can I check my child's grades online?

    All Birmingham City Schools use Chalkable InformationNOW for recording grades and attendance.  At the beginning of the school year, you will be provided with a user ID and password. Please protect this confidential information. Should you misplace it, you must request it in person from the school registrar. No passwords will be provided over the phone.You may then access online grades by going to the Online Portal. The portal is also available through the Birmingham City Schools App. You will be able to view your child's grades for each course, along with attendance and discipline records.


    8. Where can I find the phone number and the principal's name for the school my child will attend?

    A list of all Birmingham City Schools is available here. This list provides phone numbers, principal's name, and links to each school's website.

    9. How do I get a copy of the school's calendar?

    The official school system calendar is available here on the website. All schools in the system follow this schedule for holidays, grading periods, and exam schedules. The school calendar is available on the school website.
