On Thursday, March 24, Birmingham City Schools will host a Career Fair at Carver High School’s practice gym from 4 to 8 p.m. for all teaching areas. The school’s address is 3900 – 24th St. North.

Interested teachers should first apply online by visiting //www.bhamcityschools.org/Page/238. The district is looking for employees in all areas, including critical need areas in math, science, special education and foreign language.

For certified teachers specialized in math, science, special education and foreign language, which are considered “critical need areas’’ for the district, the system will offer a one-time, $5,000 signing bonus. Up to 20 teachers will be offered the bonus. These teachers will start working for Birmingham City Schools fall 2016.

Each teacher accepting the $5,000 bonus agrees to work for the school system for at least three consecutive years from August 2016 to May 2019. If a teacher opts to voluntarily leave employment with the district before the end of the three years, that teacher agrees to repay the one-time bonus in full.

Why offer the signing bonus? Nationally and locally, there is a shortage of “critical need areas’ “ teachers. This signing bonus will assist the district in giving students a high-quality education.

Superintendent Dr. Kelley Castlin-Gacutan said the $5,000 signing bonus will not only make the district competitive with other school districts but also attract highly-qualified candidates early. “We know that there are many December (college) graduates possibly in need of a job. We want to make sure we have every opportunity to attract the best and the brightest. This is an opportunity to do this, ’’ Dr. Castlin-Gacutan said.

The district is also looking for English, health science, elementary, social studies and engineering teachers, as well as counselors, bus drivers, child nutrition program employees and custodians. These positions are full-time but do not qualify for the $5,000 signing bonus.

Those applying for teaching positions should bring a resume. Everyone should remember to apply for the job online before attending the career fair.
