Description from the Upward Bound Academy website:
"The Upward Bound Academy at UAB consists of two Classic Upward Bound programs and two Upward Bound Math & Science programs. The Upward Bound Academy is an intensive year-round pre-college TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that focuses on the academic support and personal development of its participants during high school. It provides supplemental education, personal and academic counseling, tutoring, mentoring, career exploration, assistance with scholarships and financial aid applications, and the cultural exposure necessary for potential first-generation college students and/or economically disadvantaged youth to successfully complete both secondary and postsecondary education. All programs serve high schools in Birmingham City and the Greater Birmingham Metropolitan area. Upward Bound Math & Science is dedicated to students who show strengths in Math & Science AND desire to pursue a STEM career."

The 5th Annual Greater Atlanta Historically Black College and University (HBCU) College Fair is scheduled for Saturday, February 4th (VIRTUAL) from 10am until 2pm and in-person Saturday, February 11th, 2023, from 9am until 2pm at Meadowcreek High School, 4455 Steve Reynolds Blvd., Norcross, Georgia 30093. The fair is sponsored by the RKL Education Foundation, Incorporated and The Gwinnett Pearls of Service Foundation, Incorporated of Gwinnett County, Georgia!
This year includes an HBCU “Homecoming” week of online events, workshops, and contests for scholarships and awards from February 4th through February 11th, 2023.

Additionally, student musicians will have the opportunity to display their talents before a panel of distinguished HBCU band directors for college band scholarships. Last year, the participating HBCU band directors offered students a total of $85,000 in potential scholarship dollars.

The Summer Teen Program is an opportunity for service-focused students to share their passion for science by leading hands-on demonstrations, helping with summer camps, and interpreting McWane exhibits in an effort to help our visitors connect and engage with STEM in an accessible way!In this program, McWane volunteers gain valuable leadership skills in a fun, hands-on environment and get to strengthen their public speaking skills while developing a strong work ethic. This volunteer program emphasizes the professional development of its participants and is a unique opportunity for students to see how STEM can apply to everyday situations.To apply for the program, candidates will submit an online application with an attached resume and two letters of recommendation. All new candidates will participate in an interview after they apply. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest
The competition is open to male high school seniors in the Birmingham area. The first place winner will be awarded a $1000.00 scholarship!! Second place prize is a $500.00 scholarship and 3rd place prize is a $250.00 scholarship. This extraordinary event will include a chance to hear some of Birmingham’s most talented students and a great brunch. Admission to the event is absolutely free. We are hopeful that you will encourage your students to attend this event. There is no cost for students selected to compete.
