BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- (Aug. 16, 2019) --  The Birmingham Board of Education (BBOE) recognized several stakeholders at the regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2019. 

Dr. Yvette Richardson, Alabama State Board of Education Member District IV, recognized Dr. Sherri Huff, Program Specialist K-12 Physical Education/ Health Education and Driver's Education at Birmingham City Schools, as the 2018-2019 Alabama Champions for Healthy Active School's Champion of the Year. 

The BBOE also recognized the first 2019-2020 school year winners of the Force For Greatness Employee Recognition Awards.

  • Customer Service Excellence Award: Huffman Academy's Front Office Staff
  • Above & Beyond the Call of Duty: Michael Cox, Head Custodian at Malachi Wilkerson Middle School

The following donations were made to BCS: 

  • Avondale Elementary School in the amount of $700.00 from the Forest Park/South Avondale Neighborhood Association to purchase a washer and dryer.
  • Barrett Elementary School in the amount of $3,000.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for general educational support.
  • Barrett Elementary School in the amount of $1,000.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for general educational support.
  • Birmingham City Schools in the amount of $250.00 from Alabama Educational Association for the retirement appreciation banquet.
  • Birmingham City Schools in the amount of $363.62 from Brooks Consulting for the retirement appreciation banquet.
  • Birmingham City Schools in the amount of $500.00 from Health Star for the retirement appreciation banquet.
  • Brown Elementary School in the amount of $5,000.00 from Belview Heights Neighborhood to purchase musical instruments.
  • Carver High School in the amount of $12,000.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for the following: Softball - $2,000.00; Choir - $2,000.00; Football - $2,000.00; ROTC Drill Team - $1,000.00; General Support - $4,000.00; and ADECA Program - $1,000.00.
  • Carver High School in the amount of $3,500.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for the following: Football - $1,500.00 and General Support - $2,000.00.
  • EPIC Elementary School in the amount of $2,000.00 from Commissioner Shelia Tyson to benefit all students at each school.
  • Jackson-Olin High School in the amount of $1,000.00 from Bush Hills Neighborhood for the band, sports, science and math.
  • Jones Valley Middle School in the amount of $5,000.00 from Essential Ingredients to purchase 32 laptops and headphones and a charging cart for Ansleigh Davies' classroom.
  • Minor Elementary School in the amount of $2,000.00 from Commissioner Shelia Tyson to benefit all students at each school.
  • Norwood Elementary School in the amount of $3,000.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for general educational support.
  • Norwood Elementary School in the amount of $1,000.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for general educational support.
  • Oliver Elementary School in the amount of $1,000.00 from State Representative Mary Moore for general educational support.
  • Oxmoor Valley Elementary School in the amount of $1,000.00 from Oxmoor Valley Neighborhood to provide assistance with all sports, science, and various educational initiatives.
  • Parker High School in the amount of $2,000.00 from Commissioner Shelia Tyson to benefit all students at each school.
  • Washington K-8 School in the amount of $11,000.00 from Commissioner Shelia Tyson to purchase a digital marquee.
  • Wilkerson School in the amount of $2,500.00 from Commissioner Shelia Tyson to benefit all students at each school.

Community members voiced various concerns and offered suggestions during community voice.

A financial presentation was made by interim CFO Crystal Briggs regarding Financial Statement and Cash Balance for May 2019.Next Meetings:
