Birmingham Board of Education Approves New Budget

The new budget year for Birmingham City Schools starts on Oct. 1, 2023, and the Board of Education has approved spending $480,295,260 to continue providing robust academic programs for scholars and support for the 2,700 employees who make teaching and learning happen every day.

The budget for fiscal year 2024 is less than the previous year because some federal funds associated with pandemic relief have ended.

Employees will get a 2 percent state-mandated pay increase, effective Oct. 1, 2023. Other highlights include funding for the expansion of fine arts for fifth graders, signing bonuses for new hires in hard to fill positions, pay increases for head coaches, band directors, stadium workers and managers, and a continued focus on security staffing and enhancements throughout the district.
