Thousands of baseball fans poured into Birmingham this week for the MLB game at historic Rickwood Field and the tribute to the Negro Leagues. Birmingham City Schools' scholars had a close view of the historic event and an opportunity to meet many baseball greats. They also attended a star-studded luncheon with greats such as #ReggieJackson and comedian Roy Wood Jr., a BCS alum.
More than 175 BCS high school scholars began their participation in NewGen Peacebuilders last year. Their mission: develop ideas to reduce violence and increase peace. The Superintendent’s Academy is a 4-week, achievement-based, summer enrichment opportunity designed to engage scholars in grades 5-12. The program includes performance-based activities to promote confidence and creativity, critical literacy skills, financial literacy, STEAM (Science Technology Engineering, Art, and Math), problem-based learning, and community service.
