Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan, Jackson-Olin's Derrick Johnson, and Board Member Yamika Foy

Each month, the Birmingham Board of Education recognizes the employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to make the district a better place, even when no one is looking.

These employees are critical to establishing and maintaining a positive culture and a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. They inspire their colleagues and our students to pursue excellence, serve others, and collaborate effectively towards common goals.

During its regularly scheduled board meeting on December 9, the board recognized:

Derrick Johnson, Custodian, P.D. Jackson-Olin High School

Derrick consistently demonstrates an exceptional work ethic and a strong commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for our students, staff, and visitors.

Derrick is always on hand to help whenever needed—often stepping in before being asked. Whether assisting with school events, responding quickly to unexpected needs, or providing support to coworkers, he approaches every task with reliability and professionalism. His positive attitude is evident in every interaction. Derrick always has a smile and never complains about his duties.

His consistent dependability, uplifting spirit, and willingness to go above and beyond make him an invaluable member of our team.
