Jackson-Olin scholars are working to restore Village Creek.

Teams from P.D. Jackson-Olin High School and South Hampton K-8 School are among 100 schools nationwide to advance to the semifinal round of Samsung's annual Solve for Tomorrow competition.

The objective of the competition is for teams to provide solutions to real-world problems using science, engineering, technology, and mathematics (STEM).

The team from Jackson-Olin is working on a Village Creek restoration project, using STEM tools to monitor and improve environmental health for the Ensley community. The proposal is called the Mobile F.I.E.L.D. Cart.

Meanwhile, South Hampton (last year's Alabama winner in the competition) is developing a community-based tornado alert system called Storm Sentinels to help protect vulnerable neighborhoods like Pratt City.

The teams earned $10,00 prize package of Samsung technology and the opportunity to compete for additional prize packages.
