First Class Pre-K
2026-27 Pre-Registration Opens January 15
First Class Pre-K programs are accepting online pre-registration applications for the 2026-2027 school year. The pre-registration period begins on January 15 and concludes on February 20, 2026. Click the button below to begin!
Enrollment & Eligibility
Enrollment is open to all children four years of age on or before 9/1/26 who are residents of Birmingham City School District. (Children who are eligible for kindergarten are not eligible for pre-k.)
Enrollees must provide:
Copy of child's birth certificate and immunization form
Proof of residence -- a current utility bill and a copy of a lease or mortgage
Apply for their zone school
There is no registration fee for First Class Pre-K. No child will be denied participation on basis of income, sex, race, color, national origin, or disability.
Random Drawing Details
Acceptance into a First Class Pre-K program is strictly through random drawing. Parent/guardian does not have to be present at drawing. Email notices of acceptance status will be sent by April 18.

About Us
The Birmingham City School System offers a High Quality Pre-K program, with over 700 students.
With a focus on kindergarten readiness, 4-year old children are provided with authentic and purposeful learning experiences designed to support high achievement at the earliest level of formal instruction.
Comprehensive early learning standards.
Pre-K teachers have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Pre-K teachers have specialized early childhood training.
Assistant Pre-K teachers have a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or equivalent.
Teachers participate in a substantial number of professional development.
Maximum class size is 18.
Staff to child ratio is 1:9.
Children receive screening, referral and support services for vision, hearing, dental, health and other support areas.
Children are provided meals and/or snacks.
Systems hold individual classrooms accountable and monitor to ensure quality standards are being met.
