The English as a Second Language and World Languages Department supports Multilingual Learners across all Birmingham City Schools, providing English language instruction in grades K–12 to help students succeed academically and socially.
We focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through content-based instruction. Our team coordinates the WIDA ACCESS assessment and the Seal of Biliteracy, offers translation and interpretation services, and evaluates foreign transcripts. We also promote family engagement through district-wide events and support educators with professional development in culturally responsive teaching, data-driven instruction, and effective strategies for English Learners.
