Each month, the Birmingham Board of Education recognizes the employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to make the district a better place, even when no one is looking. 

These employees are critical to establishing and maintaining a positive culture and a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. They inspire their colleagues and our students to pursue excellence, serve others, and collaborate effectively towards common goals.

During its regularly scheduled board meeting on June 8, the board recognized the following employees:

John L. Baker, Director of Safety and Security; Gary Lewis, Project Manager -- Network Administration; Dr. Terry Lamar, Chief of Staff

Gary Lewis, Project Manager – Network Administration: John L. Baker, Director of Safety & Security, nominated Gary Lewis for the Customer Service Award. 

ā€œGary has been instrumental in helping us implement the Crisis Alert System. His expertise, patience, and dedication have been invaluable throughout this critical project. He approached each step with professionalism and a deep understanding of our needs, ensuring that the process moved forward smoothly and effectively,ā€ wrote Baker.  

ā€œWhile the work is ongoing, Gary's contributions have already made a significant impact. We deeply appreciate his commitment and are excited to continue working with him as we move forward,ā€ he added. ā€œThank you, Gary, for your outstanding work and support.ā€

Board Member Derrick Billups; Inglenook STEM Teacher Rhett Franklin; Dr. Terry Lamar, Chief of Staff

Rhett Franklin, STEM Teacher, Inglenook Pre-K-8: Rhett Franklin deserves recognition for the Caught Being Great award due to his unwavering dedication to student success, his innovative teaching methods, and his ability to create an engaging and supportive classroom environment. His passion for education is evident in the way he inspires students to reach their full potential, fosters a love for learning, and goes above and beyond to ensure every student feels valued and capable. Whether through creative lesson plans, personalized support, or his positive influence within the school community, Mr. Franklin exemplifies excellence in teaching and the true spirit of this award.

Board Member Derrick Billups; Inglenook Bookkeeper Precious Marcus; Dr. Terry Lamar, Chief of Staff

Precious Marcus, School Bookkeeper, Inglenook Pre-K-8: Precious Marcus is highly deserving of the Customer Service Award for her outstanding professionalism, patience, and dedication to helping others. As our school bookkeeper, she consistently goes above and beyond to assist staff, students, and families with warmth and efficiency. Her friendly demeanor, willingness to answer questions, and ability to handle any situation with grace make her an invaluable asset to our school. Whether solving financial concerns or simply offering a reassuring smile, Precious embodies exceptional customer service and plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and supportive school environment. 

Board Member James Sullivan; Phillips Academy Principal Dr. E. Nzeocha and CNP Manager Willie Armstrong; Dr. Terry Lamar, Chief of Staff

Willie Armstrong, CNP Manager, Phillips Academy:  Dr. Raynetta Wiggins, Assistant Principal at Phillips Academy, nominated Willie Armstrong for the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award.

ā€œMr. Armstrong exemplifies commitment and reliability, having never taken a single day off. His presence ensures that our students consistently receive nutritious meals in a clean, well-managed, and welcoming environment. His work ethic sets a powerful example for the entire school community,ā€ she wrote. 

ā€œWe are truly grateful for the care, consistency, and pride he brings to the role every day. He is an invaluable member of our team, and we are proud to recognize his outstanding service.ā€

Board Member James Sullivan; Dr. Terry Lamar, Chief of Staff; Phillips Academy Custodian Julius Newton and Principal Dr. E. Nzeocha and Custodian

Julius Newton, Custodian, Phillips Academy: Jessica Muhammad, sixth grade math teacher at Phillips Academy, nominated Julius Newton for the Above & Beyond the Call of Duty Award. 

ā€œNo matter the request Mr. Newton shows up quietly, humbly, and with a deep sense of care for our students, staff, and building. Even while managing personal health challenges, he has continued to give his best to our school every single day,ā€ she wrote.

ā€œMr. Newton is more than a custodian to us-he’s a steady, positive presence who has truly kept our school running smoothly. We are incredibly grateful for him, his dedication and all that he has done to keep pride in Phillips Academy. Mr. Newton will be retiring on August 1, and he will truly be missed.ā€
