Eight schools within the Jackson-Olin High School feeding pattern are now equipped with state-of-the-art hydroponic farming systems for hands-on science learning.
The systems, installed through a groundbreaking partnership between Birmingham City Schools, the City of Birmingham, Jones Valley Teaching Farm and NY Sun Works, will not only augment science education but also generate hundreds of pounds of fresh produce each year.
Today, Bush Hills STEAM Academy cut the ribbon on one of the new farming systems. Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin, Birmingham City Council President Darrell O'Quinn, Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan of Birmingham City Schools, Birmingham Board of Education Members Mary Boehm and Sonja Smith, NY Sun Works Executive Director Manuela Zamora, and Jones Valley Teaching Farm Executive Director Amanda Storey were among the guests for the ceremony.
In addition to Bush Hills, Jackson-Olin High School, Green Acres Middle School, South Hampton K-8 School, Central Park Elementary School, Charles A Brown Elementary School, Minor Elementary School, and Wylam Elementary School are participating in this exciting program.
