An innovative new grocery store operated at Huffman Middle School has officially opened its doors to students and their families.
Launched in partnership between Birmingham City Schools and Birmingham City Council District 1 Councilor Clinton Woods and operated by Atlanta-based Goodr, the 300-square-foot grocery store is stocked with fresh produce and pantry staples for the school's families.
Goodr supplies technology and logistical support to track collect surplus food as donations and deliver them to those in need. Families register online to access the store, which is not open to the general public. The partnership will operated under a two-year pilot program.
The program is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act from dollars allocated to the District 1 office.
The partners held a ribbon cutting ceremony today to mark the store's opening. Birmingham Board of Education Member Sherman Collins, Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan, Huffman Middle School Principal Dr. Jeffrey Willis, Sr., Councilor Woods, and Goodr CEO Jasmine Crowe-Houston spoke at the ceremony and cut the ribbon.
Birmingham Board of Education Member Mary Boehm and Birmingham City Schools leadership, along with community leaders, families, and media, were in attendance.
