ALSDE report card press conference

Birmingham City Schools received its highest grade ever on the recently released annual Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) Report Card. This achievement reduced the number of schools with an “F” letter grade to one for the first time since the state began issuing the report.

The report cards are based on several objectives and provide insights into the school district’s success in various areas, including academic growth, attendance, college and career readiness, and graduation rates.

"Because of the hard work of our educators and the outstanding community support, our scholars are growing academically," said Dr. Mark Sullivan, Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools.

The numerical grade for 2024-2025 is 77, the highest grade ever for BCS on the Annual Report Card. This represents a three-point increase compared to the previous year, resulting in a seven percent increase over the span of three years. This means that a majority of the 20,000 scholars in Birmingham City Schools are making consistent progress.

While a grade of 77 and the significant reduction in the number of failing schools represents growth in the district, educators and leaders are committed to continuing the positive trend while working to ensure that every student achieves the optimum level of success.

Highlights on the Road to Success:

  • Fifteen (15) schools improved by at least one letter grade.

  • The chronic absentee rate decreased from 29% in 2023 to 14% in 2025.

  • All high schools increased or maintained their letter grade

93% decrease in number of schools with an "F" from 15 in 2023 to 1 in 2025

What’s Next for Birmingham City Schools Scholars?

Birmingham City Schools developed intentional strategies coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic to help students recover from learning loss, challenge all scholars to achieve, and support educators with the tools they need to deliver quality instruction. Equipped with resources such as instructional frameworks for instructional delivery, enhanced technology access and high-dosage tutoring intervention, BCS will continue to meet students at their individual needs and provide them the support they need to soar.

We will continue evaluating student academic progress with tools such as i-Ready in grades K-8 and common assessments in all grades. This will be conducted in December, prior to the holiday break. Our school district will also continue offering Intersession to give scholars more support for recovering learning loss, as well as opportunities for enrichment. Parental and community support are vital factors in the achievement of student success.  We anticipate the continued positive impact that all organizations and individuals have on our students from pre-K through high school graduation.
