The Alabama State Department of Education recognized EPIC Alternative Elementary School among the top schools in the state during the Alabama State Board of Education meeting held in Montgomery today.
In addition, five Birmingham City Schools – BCS Virtual Academy of Learning, Huffman Academy, Norwood Elementary School, Robinson Elementary School and Wenonah High School – were named among the most improved schools.
The Alabama State Department of Education recognizes schools for the Legislative School Performance Recognition Program each year for the top schools and most improved schools based on rankings compiled by the school grading system (with this round based on 2024-2025 school year results). The first category includes schools ranked in the top 25% of public schools. The second recognizes exemplary progress by improving the overall annual ranking of the school by at least one letter grade.

The top 25 schools in each category are honored and provided with a monetary award.
In last year’s awards, Birmingham City Schools placed three schools – Richard Arrington, Jr. Elementary School, Inglenook Pre-K-8 School, and Henry J. Oliver Elementary School – among the most improved schools.
