All seven high school track and field teams from Birmingham City Schools are competing in the Alabama High School Athletic Association 4A-7A Outdoor State Championship in Gulf Shores this weekend, with 23 total medals won in events on April 30 through May 2.
In Thursday’s action, Jackson-Olin’s Tristian Carter snagged silver in the discus throw. In the 300 meter hurdles, Wenonah’s Tamia Bruce won gold in the 5A girls race, while Huffman’s Jayden Young brought home bronze in the 6A boys competition.
In Friday’s field events, Bruce continued collecting medals with a gold in 5A girls high jump. In addition, Ramsay’s Katelyn Hicks won bronze in 5A girls shot put and Wenonah’s D’Marion Dedrick leaping to gold in the 5A boys long jump.
In the 400 meter races, Ramsay’s Quatez Williams won silver in the 5A boys heat, while Jackson-Olin’s Kaius Stewart and Parker’s Josh White finished first and second in the 6A boys event. Huffman came within fractions of a second adding to more medals to the tally, with Deryn Tilley finishing 0.2 seconds (two-tenths of a second) behind third in the 6A girls race and Joshua Blackmon falling a mere 0.04 seconds (four hundredths of a second) from third on the 6A boys side.
On the third day of the tournament, BCS squads collected 14 more medals, including gold for the Woodlawn 4x100m relay team, Ramsay and Jackson-Olin 4x400m relay teams, Huffman’s Joshua Blackmon in the 6A boys 200m and Ramsay’s Christopher Lewis in the 5A boys discus.
Ramsay’s dynamic duo of Laila Holifield and Quatez Williams each won bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m. The Ramsay girls 4x100 relay team added another bronze medal to the school’s tally.
Wenonah’s Tamia Bruce added a third medal to her count with a bronze in the 100m hurdles, while Parker’s Kejuan Lamb-Gregg, Jr. brought home bronze in the 110m hurdles.
Jackson-Olin’s Kaius Stewart, a member of the gold metal relay team, also finished third in the 200m event. Huffman’s 4x400 relay team, which includes gold-medalist Blackmon, also collected a bronze medal.
